Welcome to the future your Tesla doesn’t need oil changes, spark plugs, or traditional repair shops. However, it still requires proper care and maintenance.
On a Tesla, the most common wear components are the traditional friction brakes pads, rotors, and calipers; however, issues can also arise with the regenerative braking system itself, including potential software glitches that might lead to unexpected Braking behavior, such as phantom braking, can occasionally occur without an apparent cause.
Regenerative braking:
Tesla heavily utilizes regenerative braking, which uses the electric motors to slow the car down, thus reducing the need to use the traditional friction brakes and extending their lifespan. Due to regenerative braking, Tesla owners generally experience less wear on their traditional brake components compared to conventional vehicles.
Potential issues with regenerative braking:
Software glitches: Occasional software glitches can lead to unexpected braking events, sometimes referred to as phantom braking.
Hill driving: In steep downhill situations, the regenerative braking might not be enough, requiring more use of the traditional brakes. While less frequent, traditional brake pads and rotors can still wear down over time and need replacement, especially in situations with heavy braking or aggressive driving. Maintaining proper brake fluid levels is important for optimal braking performance.
